ISO/IEC 17025 - Laboratory Compliance

Organizations with laboratories are pursuing accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard to remain competitive in the market, increase consistency for processes related to testing and/or calibration activities, and to meet some customer requirements.

In today's market, those companies doing business in the automotive (IATF 16949) and aerospace (AS 9100) industries are looking to ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories for 3rd party assistance with testing and calibration activities. Due to some recommended practices and some industry mandates, many laboratories will not be able to bid on new contracts and may possibly lose existing contracts without obtaining accreditation.

The ISO/IEC 17025 standard focuses on the laboratory environment, processes, practices, and the competence of laboratory personnel. The accreditation process can assist with formalization and standardization of already proven best practices. The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (AALA) is a non-profit membership society which promotes excellence in accreditation and commitment to public service. The AALA is a great resource for learning about the process of becoming accredited, and how to get started.
